If you have been looking for additional ways
to incorporate technology use in your class without having to develop additional
curriculum, FreeRice.com may fit your needs.
FreeRice.com is a free trivia website that
offers many subjects and levels appropriate for grades K-12+. What makes FreeRice.com appropriate for all ages and levels is the use of adaptive testing where the level of difficulty changes
based on the student's responses to the question.
If a student gets a few questions correct, the level of difficulty rises. If a student gets an answer incorrect, the
level may drop until the student finds some success again. Questions the student answered incorrectly are
often repeated, providing an opportunity for growth.
Students answer trivia questions on FreeRice simply by visiting the website, but teachers may want to think about adding individual student accounts. Individual accounts will allow the teachers to track the number of questions the student has answered. Teachers can also set up groups that contain different students and set those groups to cover different topics. Using groups and individual accounts will open up a huge range of uses for FreeRice such as:
individual
totals…
group
competitions..
learning
stations reviewing different subjects…
differentiated
topics..
Finally, FreeRice.com has a humanitarian aspect. The program is sponsored the by United Nations World Food Programme, and their goal is to provide free education and end world hunger. Students literally earn grains of donated rice with each correct answer. The earned rice provides an indicator of progress and helps people at the same time!
If you are interested in using FreeRice in your class and need help setting up student accounts or groups, please let an ITRT know!
