History Resources for Classrooms

Since we celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day today, I thought I would share some history and civil rights websites that provide primary resources, lesson plans, and other materials that teachers and students can use in the classroom.

TeachingHistory.org is the site for the National History Education Clearinghouse.  The site provides resources in three areas- best practices, teaching materials, and history content.  Teachers can search for primary resources, class activities, lesson plans, virtual field trips, and other materials.

The Library of Congress website has a section for teachers where you can search for lesson plans that meet a specific SOL.

Teaching Tolerance offers classroom resources that cover such subjects as race and ethnicity, immigration, bullying, school culture, and gender equity.

The Digital Public Library of America has primary source sets for history, literature, and culture.  The sets include a wide range of materials taken from museums, archives, and libraries throughout the United States.

PBS LearningMedia offers thousands of digital resources for, not only social studies, but all academic areas.

Zinn Education Project's goal is to provide resources and lessons that teach a more inclusive version of United States history.
